The letter of the day is M (for mystery)

If there's one thing I love about a magazine subscription, it's that little fizz of excitement that I get when my treat arrives in the mail. I'm very selective about what I subscribe to these days. A few years ago, I was anyone's, seduced by any 'offer', happy to receive whatever they were willing to send out. When The Builder questioned the sheer volume of pages arriving every month, I'd wave him off with a 'it's tax deductible darling'.

Not anymore. I mean, it's still tax deductible - one of the few bonuses of writing freelance - but I'm not as willing to wade through a million pages to get what I want. Call it time management.

At the moment, there are just a few valid subscriptions in the Fibro (if you don't count the Lego magazine... which I don't). I've spoken before of my love for O magazine, and take great pleasure in sitting on our back deck, flicking through its pages. There are some Australian magazines, which I both love and work for (no names, no pack drill). And there is the one that arrived today.

Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine is one of my biggest treats. It arrives sporadically and, seemingly, randomly, due to surface mail, from the US. There is no colour, beyond the cover. The paper is cheap newsprint, the concept old-fashioned. But I love it. Packed cover-to-cover with detective stories, it features some of the biggest names in crime writing - and lots of people whose names you've never heard. Perfect, bite-sized crime fiction in a perfect, bath-sized package. My copies are passed around the family and enjoyed by many. Mr7 is beginning to line up for his turn.

This year is the 70th anniversary of EQMM. Long may it reign. Or long enough for me to get around to writing a story that might be good enough to grace its pages.

Visit www.themysteryplace.com/eqmm (source of my image) for more information and to check out an array of past EQMM covers. Fun!

In other news, I'm guest posting with Scribbling Mum today, all about being the only pink in a house full of blues. Come and say hello!

  2. I use to be a big consumer of magazines, but not so much now, although I do love Dumbofeather for it's sheer creativity. I think you may have helped with a Christmas pressie idea for my husband - this magazine is right up his street.
PS - you're very sad Twitter comment worked on me!!

  3. I believe I was the initial purchaser of this fab publication for you? I never got into it myself, but it definitely has the most amazing stable of writers contributing to it.

  4. I can't believe I didn't mention in my previous comment how lucky you are to have magazines tax-deductible. I would love that!

  5. And, really, how wonderful it is to know that an old-fashioned magazine like Ellery McQueen can still exist in this over-styled world. That's so heartening.

    Swoosh, swoosh!

  8. I currently subscribe to just two magazines. Peppermint and Frankie - I look for indie/vintage/quirky and eco-friendly in a magazine.

I love that old-school look of EQ!

  9. I've never heard of that magazine, but it sounds intriguing.

I confess. I don't buy, read or subscribe to a single magazine, even before this eye thing. the last time I picked up a magazine was when I was in hospital having Sammy (almost 4 years ago now). I just can't stand them.

Though I've never tried "O" or anything similar. But the typical 'women's' magazines and paparrazzi crap really bug me.

But then, until 2 months ago, I was the girl who literally never left the house without a book. So there was never a need to turn to a magazine.

  12. Oh you do my head in! No commenting allowed in self-imposed magazine-making lockdown here, but could not resist sneaking a peak at the post that caused the crickets! You post so fast - I am sure I only get to every second one - and this was one was the odd number. Have not heard of your detective mag, but boy, have we collected a swag of incredible mags in our BIG research. Some VERY cool publications circulating at the moment. Here's hoping you'll subscribe!

  13. I've never subscribed to a magazine, and I rarely purchase them. I just haven't found the right magazine to commit to. I'm not really into the gossip mags and that, so I feel a tad limited. I don't mind the interview or 2 with a celebrity, but I honestly couldn't give 2 shits about their life and what "A friend close to the celebrity" knows, or doesn't know.
I do think it's pretty cool that magazines are tax deductible for you!

  14. Oh my. Giggle worthy. I've just read the post that got me to this post. And it's a comment-worthy article! I would have commented, except I hadn't visited for a while and am now filling your email with comments from me. Yes, your weekly stalker (or less frequently). But still stalking.

This mag does sound super cool. Especially because everyone enjoys it. FABULOUS!

As for me, I cancelled every magazine subscription a while back to cut costs around here, plus I don't have time to read my monthly Melbourne's Child let alone the "Home More Beautiful Than Mine" types. I can blame blogging for that. Usually I love to turn pages.

    xx
