Have yourself a very early Christmas

The first Christmas card entered the Fibro two weeks ago. Two. Weeks. Mr7 smuggled it home in his school bag, more interested in the lollipop that came with it than in the card itself. Until he realised that he had the first card. The only card. Which, as far as he's concerned, pretty much makes him the most popular member of the household.

He may have a point.

Personally, I think that the first week of November is a little early for Christmas cards. Mr7's card has hung, in splendid isolation, in the acreage of the living room venetian blind (see image), for nearly 14 days now. It looks very lonely. We have all fully appreciated it from every angle.

Longterm readers of this blog will know that I am a fan of the Christmas card. I like to send them. I like to receive them. I have already bought some splendid examples from Leaf Journals. But there's no way I'd send them before the first week of December. Maybe the second. And I don't tend to give them to people I see all the time. I don't do The Exchange.

What do you think? Can you peak too early with Christmas cards? When's the optimum time to send (and receive)? Oh, and where do you put yours?

  1. If, and only if... I get to send cards, it is in a rushed panic a week before Christmas, so I can get the full effects of the adrenaline rush of "will Australia Post deliver before Santa does" thing. In fact, I tend to be more a New Year greeting giver... relaxed, chilled, a bit more chatty. Maybe having my own Christmas cards to send will help. Probably not. Thanks for the mention, btw.

  2. A November Christmas card - are you serious? And an early November Christmas card at that! I'm with you - first week in december at the very earliest. I prefer the 2nd or third week myself and I'm with you - only for those I don't see all of the time.

  3. I'm a Christmas card fan too.
But early November - that's a bit keen, isn't it?!

  4. From the1st of December onward, its the season of jolliness, at which you can start to play Xmas songs over and over and select your Xmas tree to decorate with excess. At no point before this should xmas be uttered to the under 10s, and the sending of cards should not come before this time and with absolutely no candy strapped to it, Taking away the gift of words and simple pleasures of a Xmas card in a world of sugar fed kids.

We pur them on our mantle piece and a string across our window....

    Great post.

  5. Oh. my. goodness! See, a well meaning, sweet and lovely offering like that would have me freaking out quietly on the inside. I feel the pressure of Christmas is too great as it is. Decorations in the shops, Santa's starting to position themselves in every centre, all the talk talk talk of presents and Christmas meal plans. It's coming around quicker each year and part of that I believe, is due to the fact it's in the best interests of the commercial juggernaut, to kick it off as soon as possible. I am a fan of the Chrissy card too though personally. Mind you, haven't even contemplated writing one at this point. I have a couple of weeks up my sleeve, right?!? xo

  6. oh, wow.I agree, far too early!
It looses it's meaning to get a card so early. It's like getting a birthday day a couple of months before your birthday nice, but awkward.

I agree with sending cards! Yes! In this age of online communication, Christmas still feels like the one occasion for getting out the pen and and paper and putting down thoughts of love and joy!

    I'd better get started!

  8. I pin ours on wide dark green satin ribbon that hang verticially around the place. Very 1980's. But I am loving your trick with the blinds.

I send Christmas cards. I just got them back from the printer. I love them. You never know Al, you might just get one delivered to FibroTown...

    xx

  9. PS I do not do the exchange. Nor do I indulge the kids. Mean mummy. They get 40 cards with 40 candy canes attached and send none...

  10. My little one came home from school last week saying that kids were starting to hand out candy canes already. What???? C'mon. We've just finished last Christmas. I think leave it all until December..... except the tree. I have mine up early this year. It just happened that way... found it in the shed and whacked it up. It is bringing great joy already. A-M xx

  11. Far too early. I love Christmas cards, but for me I have to send them in the first two weeks.
Ours live on the venetians in the front room, and that first card (sadly) usually comes from Fergus, our local real estate agent. Got to love a small town!

  12. Had a good chuckle about that post, Al. Bring on the cheer I say - so what if its a bit early? The kids get so much fun out of it all.

  13. 'The Exchange' had me chuckling, so with you on that one.

I religiously send mine out in the first week of Dec. That is pretty much religion done for me and Christmas. x

  14. I agree with you. Not until after Thanksgiving, at least!

  16. With Immy's birthday mid December we don't allow Christmas to be "up" until after her party/birthday. No fun having a fairy party with a big tree stuck in the middle of the room dangling with tinsel.

The cards, I hate the exchange and also don't send to people (like close family) that we will spend Christmas day with - but half the family still send them. Why?

  17. I send cards the second week in December, for card giving I hand them over when I see the person on whatever day we meet up for Christmas hellos.

  18. Christmas does not begin until Dec1. And then it's all on! Love Xmas. I do not howe ver, send cards. Instead, we make a donation to a charity and send a text/email message to friends. It's a tradition we started a few years back. x

  19. I used to be a major christmas card organiser but this year, I'm turning to ecards cause we're totally broke. I don't mind it anymore. I have to be practical.
