It's a good life

Sometimes, a picture says a thousand words. Even for me.

These are my tomatoes. My tomatoes.

After a shaky start, my Jack and the Tomato Stalk plants are bearing fruit. Lots and lots of red, ripe, juicy fruit. Ambrosia.

I am in awe.

And delighted.

I love gardening. It makes me smile.*

Are you a gardener? How does your garden grow?

*Feel free to remind me of this post next time I'm complaining about the weeds.

  2. How does my garden grow? Not so well these days. I seem to have lost the touch. Temporarily I hope. I have things in pots, all at seedling stage. Today I went out and picked beans to go with my dinner. There were two. Not two kilos, not two dozen. Just two beans. Ha Ha. I tossed them in the steamer with half a bunch of (bought) broccolini.

  4. Your tomatoes are AWESOME.

I am growing my first ever crop of tomatoes - my 9 year old picked the varieties, so we have about 8 different sorts. But none like yours.

  5. Nothing better than fresh vege straight from YOUR garden!

I'm *hoping* to plant a couple of veggie patches next year.

  6. Oh, I can only imagine all the yumminess that is your tomatoes. Will you eat them in a salad, just as a snack, or put them in a sauce?

It's cold here and threatening to snow and I'm very jealous.

  7. They look great and the ones you grow yourself taste so much better. Enjoy :) Jen

  8. We are less gardeners and more gluttons who love/hate being at the whim of the harvest gods. Sometimes we grow food; sometimes we grow weeds and provide shelter for birds, bugs, and snakes. You just never know, and that's the, ahem, fun part.

  9. Like Lucy said, that's a good crop before Christmas. I love grazing on the little cherry tomatoes while being out in the garden. Only 80% of my tomatoes make it back into the house.

  10. Gorgeous, delicious!
I do like gardening. I just purchased Stephanie Alexander book on veggie gardening. That's what I'll be doing in the new year. X

  11. What a crop! I am trying some cherry toms this year as I have not had much success growing full size tomatoes. Our bush is currently covered in flowers and little green fruit so I am hopeful.

  13. How exciting! They look gorgeous... Yes, I'm a gardener, I love it and would rather spend 5 hours in the garden than 1 hour doing housework.

  14. Well done you! I bet they are 100% yummier than those practically dead things they are trying to palm off as tomatoes in the shops these days. Tasteless! It has almost motivated me to plant my own... but then I discovered the home delivery straight from the market. lol.

  15. Thanks everyone. I am as pleased as punch. You'd think I created them, rather than simply putting in some seedlings...

  16. Wow - those are some tomatoes! How exciting!

  17. Excellent work, Allison!

I'm a learner gardner. I have gotten the lemon tree to fruit, managed to keep my mum and aunty's plant clippings alive and this summer, I'm going to get my very own pot plants!!

  18. My garden grows weeds. That's what it does. Everything else dies, but the weeds thrive. I just go with it these days. I have never had so many compliments. x

  19. I love gardening and have had great success with cherry and regular tomatoes. There is such a good feeling about growing your own herbs and vegies, and it's a fantastic activity for kids. Those tomatoes look delicious. Well done!

  20. i dream of one day harvesting something semi decent from something i've planted. on the other hand i have an awesome old fig tree in my back yard that produces great figs - so that is my only claim of the home grown variety!

  21. AWESOME tomatoes. Well done.

My parents had a fab vegie patch in the backyard when I was a kid. My friend Teresa and I would come home from school and eat one baby tomato after another. They were so delicious.

My MIL also grew amazing citrus fruits. We're attempting a lime tree. For the margaritas of course!

  22. They look fantastic! I'd love a veggie garden, it's on my wishlist for the big house we'll buy when we win the lottery!

  23. Love your tomatoes. And love my garden. I think it's going to be a couple of weeks before I get red tomatoes but we've got cucumbers going mad.

Isn't watching things grow the greatest therapy in the world?

  24. You got yourself some nice tomatoes there! Well done.

  25. I have planted my first ever vegie patch and to my frustration it is very slow going.

My pumpkin, zucchini and cucumber have flowers on them so I am hoping vegies are not too far away.

I've also got carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, capsicums and an assortment of lettuces on the way.

  26. @Mammamusing - you're doing better than me. Apart from my tomatoes, I have some rhubarb and some beets. Not exactly cornucopia.

@Harriet - Yes, it's great therapy - instantly calming! Unless the snails eat everything... then it just makes me grumpy.

  27. FABULOUS. I am in awe. I hope to one day do the same, but in the meantime I will worship you. This would make me SO happy. So well done lady, well done. Now pass the salt & pepper...

  28. I am a terrible gardener but we persevere and every now and then it bears fruit - like our first cucumber for lunch today :) Enjoy you tomatoes.

  29. Amazing how this picture did get so many comments. But it is gorgeous. I like Romas best. Nice and meaty for slicing into sandwiches.

The picture gives me Oz envy. Even in California, tomatoes have to come from hot houses at this time of year.

  30. I am looking out my window and seeing grey skies and a cold wind shake the trees. it's bleak and cold here, so seeing your tomatoes gave me this shot of warmth and sun and the taste of summer.

    Your tomatoes gave me hope!

  31. Homegrown tomatoes are wonderful, aren't they? Sounds like you have a good harvest! Well done.

  32. Good on you! I cannot grow a single thing, if I just look at it, it will die.

  33. Those tomatoes look AMAZING ... I bet they taste incredible too.

As for how I garden? ... very badly I would say. I prefer plants that just learn to look after themselves! ;)

  34. Oh my, you tomatoes look awesome! My tomato plants are just starting to flower - hopefully I rescued them from falling over due to lack of stake just in time. We have a tiny head of cauliflower growing. I've never tasted home grown cauli, so I'm really excited. The snow peas don't make it the kitchen. And the beetroot and carrots, well, dwarfdom doesn't quite describe it. Then there's the scarecrow, possum netting, the beer traps and co-planting. It's not saving us money yet, but growing our own veggies has certainly been an adventure.

  35. I love gardening and am so jealous of you. Right now we are covered in three inches of snow and an half inch of ice…. Grrr. I can’t wait until spring comes and I can start the garden.

  36. Gorgeous tomatoes! I bet they tasted amazing too.

  37. mmmm home grown tomatoes are the best ever!

  38. They look fantastic - and there are way more tomato fans out there than I realised....

  39. I love homegrown tomatoes, we grow them every year. You really can't beat the stuff you grow yourself for flavour and freshness.

    They look great!

  40. Oh this made me laugh. I saw your title - 'Why do bother writing" & i thought I know, I know, & then I read your post! Everyone loves your tomatoes. They look very yummy!

  41. Maybe it was the sweet relief from all the 'getting organised for Christmas posts' that gave this one the popularity it had? Those tomatoes sure look yummy. Must plant mine. Thanks for Rewinding x

  42. Wow, 40+ comments on tomatoes! They are damn fine tomatoes though. Visiting from the Rewind.

  43. Aren't home grown tomatoes one of the loveliest things to photograph? Our garden is exploding right now and I am such a glutton that I pick and eat the tomatoes as I stand. Happiness!

  44. My black thumb envies you. Those are some impressive tomatoes. We have some tomato plants because my husband threw some seeds from a fresh tomato into some dirt and they seem to be thriving. They are thriving because I'm having nothing to do with them whatsoever and am leaving it up to him.
