The world is going to end on December 25. It must be. It's the only explanation for why every single thing on my To Do list has that particular deadline.
Everyone wants to 'catch up' before Christmas. Like we will not be here come Boxing Day. Multiple Mum has moved her entire Christmas 'catch up' list to January 2011 and reports great success in lowering stress levels in the Multiple household. We should all try it.
Everyone wants copy in before Christmas. Like we're not all going on holidays for at least a week or two, leaving said copy to languish unread and unloved.
December is always insanely busy. Every year I am surprised. Every year I complain about the work. Every year I forget. Temporary amnesia. The same reason women can cheerfully get pregnant with their second child, knowing what's ahead.
For now, though, I am slogging through it. One foot in front of the other. In time to Jingle Bells.
I can only imagine how Santa must feel. Now there's a man with a looming December 25 deadline.

Shudder. This is the bit that puts me into a grinch like mood. The sressy pressure bit.
ReplyDelete(We are away from the 20th.
My deadline is the 20th. Less than two weeks to endure before the beach.)
I hope you get it all done.....
Haha. Maybe the world will end. Or maybe all the craziness will. Either way, it's done.
ReplyDeleteGREAT post.
Love it. Love it. Love it. Makes me wonder: what the hell are we all thinking? Hang in there. Less than three weeks to go now...
ReplyDeleteOh this is one of my pet topics - i.e. the world will not end at Christmas. With a husband who used to work in the building industry, I know only too well the thinking pattern of all people having any kind of building or renovation work done - all must be finished by Christmas - or it's a disaster.
ReplyDeleteBut personally I have taken some of the pressure off myself at this time of year by not sending cards (I donate World Vision gifts or similar instead) and deliberately organising catch ups with friends in January, just so the world can't end...or we'd never meet up.
It's funny but every year there are things I plan to do but they just don't happen...and on Dec 26th I don't even care!
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy, isn't it?! I've had to start saying that a catch up is NOT going to happen before Christmas, as much as I would love for it to happen.
ReplyDeleteI propose that all deadlines be moved to mid-May, effective immediately.
ReplyDeleteShow of hands?
*waves*
ReplyDeleteraise her hand in agreement with River....
ReplyDeleteIt's so true - it's the same as if you go on leave for a week...everyone suddenly needs an urgent meeting with you - and you'll only be gone a week!
ReplyDeletesigh...17 more days xxxCate
I think it is all about 'starting fresh in the New Year'. It is absolute madness. Cheers for the love :)
ReplyDeleteHA! I laugh in the face of deadlines. After last year's Christmas there is pretty much nothing that could stress me out right now. I'm so unstressed I'm even on holidays... BEFORE Christmas! Unheard of.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a day like any other. It's really supposed to be about kids , in my humble opinion - I've decided to teach mine it's about fun not about perfect.
It's weird, but I think I know EXACTLY how Santa feels... x
ReplyDeleteI'm supposing Gin doesn't really help in this situation. We are the same at work. People drop stuff in and say, oh yeah, I'd like those 6 years worth of tax returns done in a week please.
ReplyDeleteUm, fuck off. You have had 6 years to get that done, why the big hurry now??
Sorry, geez didn't even know I was stressed about end of year. There you have it.
I for one can't drink Gin at work but may attempt when walking in door. xx
This drives me insane. This is the reason I barely see my husband during December of any year - clients demand everything be done before Christmas. Why? I have no idea. Ba humbug!
ReplyDeleteAll part of why I am so glad to be going away before Christmas. Means that the deadline for catch ups is the week before Christmas (not that we have many anyway!) and going to my mum's for Christmas so I don't have all the stressy/organising/cooking stuff to do. Literally counting down the days!
ReplyDeleteYes, whose idea was it to put a big holiday at the end of the year? I work in finance and have to close the books and do a new budget and all that hoo haw. And shopping too? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, this is my first year with my own business and I worried I'd have no work for a whole month, in fact this has been the busiest time I have experienced so far and everyone wants their articles, books proofed, websites live, etc, all before Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI am with you!!
ReplyDeleteI have a whole catalogue of copy to do pre-Christmas. Freaking out slightly, because I have a whole bunch of other stuff to get through too!
I had a mild panic attack shopping for Christmas presents the other night and just couldn't do it. I put everything back. And went home, put on my fuzzy socks, sat down with a mug of hot chocolate, and ordered everything online. So. Much. Better. Now if it will all just ship in time ...
ReplyDeleteThis is our first Christmas avec Little E and man, present shopping is so much harder with a baby in tow! At least we have persuaded the families that Christmas lunch is happening at our place, and that they are all bringing food, thereby avoiding the mega meals plus drive from coast to hills of years-gone-by.
ReplyDeleteGosh, it has been madly busy of late (though it's nice to know I'm not alone in that).
ReplyDeleteSometimes it feels like you're pulled in a thousand different directions ... one step at a time is often the best approach - you are wise indeed! :)
