The blinking cursor

Beat. Beat. Beat.

Blink. Blink. Blink.

Like a neon sign with a short in the electrics. Small black line in a sea of white.

Waiting.

Wanting.

My 500 words a day challenge is progressing in fits and starts. Much like the blink of the blinking cursor. Three thousand words this week. No words the week before. The middle of the book is before me. The hard yards. I do a lot of staring at the blinking cursor. Waiting for something to happen. Anything.

Some days, all I can do is write something. Anything. Just to get some words down.

Much like this blog post.

Are you writing something? Do you love or hate the blinking cursor?

  1. I'm actually part of this challenge too, and have been MIA for about the last MONTH! Last night I finally broke the drought though. I've left my run too late for the sprint room tonight, but will give it a go tomorrow night. I really do love that sprint room...gets my writing adrenaline pumping.

  2. I have spent most of today trying to work on a children's story that I started some time ago. The original plot came to me in the middle of the night, three years ago and I got up and wrote 3/4 of it that night. I have been trying to finish it off ever since...I sat in front of a blank screen most of today. But then, I went to have a shower and the words just started forming in my head..I had to keep jumping out to write on a damp piece of notepaper. Whatever works, right?

  3. I was struggling with the very same thing, the blank page! This post crossed my path, like a gift. Maybe you will find goodness in it too:

  5. Oh the dreaded blinking cursor. I see it all too often. It is hypnotic and I get stuck watching it in a trance-like state.
My 500 words-a-day challenge hasn't been going too well the last week, but I did complete my next graphic design assignment, so I'm not beating myself up.
Will again return to the blinking cursor today ;)

  6. Some days a blank page seems free and promising. Other days all I can do is look at that cursor and will it to stop pressuring me!

  8. I've been thinking about a novel for a while now. I've always dismissed it as fanciful, but now I'm at the stage of buying a specific notebook just for this project. I feel like such a flake because I have 10 other things flying around in my head, and I just hope one of them will roost. Is this how it works for you?
