Have you noticed that there's no such thing as an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, average-beyond-imagination pie anymore? Or even a Quite Nice one?
Every pie shop or bakery you drive past features 'world famous', 'legendary' or 'award-winning' pies. I know this because on our drive down the coast to our holiday destination, we drove past at least three of these signs.
We even ate an 'award-winning' pie in Pambula, NSW. It was a very nice pie. But it didn't come with a trophy or have a blue ribbon stuck to it, and I would be hard-pressed to pick it out of a pie line-up.
Just what makes a pie 'world famous' or even 'legendary'? Who decides such things? Is there a 'world famous' list? Does word-of-mouth make it so? Or does it come down to the fact that nobody stops for a Quite Nice pie anymore?
Is there a world famous pie near you? Or even a Quite Nice one?

I live in the state of Villi's vs Balfours....competition is fierce, I tell you.
ReplyDeleteGimme a homemade scotch egg any day.
Our local pie shop has several Award Winning pies. I think they must have won a ribbon at the local show, or maybe in the local Eisteddford (do they have a pie making competition? Might explain a few things?) x
ReplyDeleteI used to make "Really really good" apple pies.
ReplyDeleteI haven't the space now, (or the inclination), to be rolling out pastry so I don't make them anymore.
Which is a shame because a bought pie is nowhere near as nice as mine.
Barbie's making me laugh with her pie. Don't feel so bad wasting time on the interwebz now. It's better than baking for dolls, right?
ReplyDeleteDon't know about awards, but our pie shop has a sign "Welcome to Muzza's Pies ...Buy one or we'll both starve". They're very tasty.
Mrs catch sign is a good sign to tempting visitor...
ReplyDeleteI would kind of like ANY pie near me right now, world famous or not. Average would be great. Please send all average pies my way, stat, okay?
ReplyDeleteIt's cheapening the title really, isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem to take much to be award winning.
We had the 'best fish and chips in town' when camping this week - 'cause the other good fish & chip shop had shut down!!!
:-)
If anyone wants to open a pie shop here in Belgium they will truly be The Best In The Country, given that there are NO PIES HERE AT ALL!!!! Oh god I miss them.
ReplyDeleteHere there are Bakery competitions, but it's all about the bread and the pastries. Not a dollop of sauce in sight. Sigh. :(
I am accross the world and I read your blog, therefore it is in fact world famous!
ReplyDeleteThx for the retweet
Cranky Old Man
Robertson in the Southern Highlands make yummy pies - and they're apparently world famous.
ReplyDeleteI have had a Robertson pie @Samelia's Mum - they are Quite Nice, it's true. But I think @Mrs Catch is winning for best sign so far.
ReplyDeletewe have "world famous fried pies"...if you've heard of them I will believe the claim! They're in Davis, Oklahoma.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. It seems like everywhere you look someone offers "award winning" something or other. Like you, I wonder who gives out all these awards. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo funny. I guess nothing is normal anymore these days and nice is not quite good enough. LOL.
ReplyDeleteAny Aussie pie would be award-winning according to my very patriotic husband. What is it with Aussie's and pies anyway? When he & I first met I baked him a whole grain crusted (hand made)vegetarian pie and I think that's why he fell in love with me. I don't usually make pies, they're a lot of work.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! Your blog is cute. Someday I may also live in a (pink?)Fibro, when we move back to AU. Cheryl

Over here, not so much award winning:D I have not come across any award winning pies so far.
ReplyDeletedammit, now all I want is pie!
ReplyDeleteI just made a Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie tonight, for me and my hubby, and I thought it was pretty good! (Maybe not legendary or award-winning, but I bet it would be pretty good with a nice, cold glass of milk!) :) Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteNow I want pie *cries*
ReplyDeleteI live on the outskirts of NYC so we have a lot of world famous bagels and pizzas. Boggles the mind that they have all won some sort of award.
ReplyDeleteThat photo is making me crave dessert.
