Are you a writer or a reader?

I had one of those moments today. Someone suggested I put together a newsletter for the Fibro. You know, weekly updates, little titbits, news and weather. Well, maybe not weather, though it does feature around here...

Anyhoo, my moment was this: if I had a newsletter, would it be about writing? Or reading? Or ... well, a whole mishmash of things, pretty much like this blog. Writing tips, info about books and publishing, updates about my projects and the projects of other writers I love, blog stuff... you know, stuff.

And if I had such a newsletter, would anyone be interested?

So I'm asking. Would you be interested in my weather updates newsletter - and what would you like to see in it? Do you like the Fibro writer posts best - or are you here as a reader?

  1. As an Al Tait fan, I am interested in stuff about your projects

as a writer, I am interested in writing tips and advice.

Should you do a newsletter? Only if it can add value to me as someone who already reads every post (which I suspect the majority of your devoted readers do). And also so long as it is not onerous for you else you will get over doing it really quickly!

  2. I think your blog is enough. I cannot see how a newsletter would "improve" on that. I'm a reader, definitely... at least at the moment. I love reading your posts about your little insights into life, your stories, your world. Like mine, and yet not like mine. Maybe one day soon I will write about those too.

    1. Mine... not yours! Just in case you weren't clear on that!

  3. Love all that you post Al including the writing tips and articles. I say stick with the blog. Newsletters can be a lot of extra work (I know I used to do them for clients in my old VA days) and as Kelly said you may get 'over it'. :)

  4. A newsletter is really passe when you have a blog. What would the newsletter offer that the blog doesn't? I like being able to visit a blog at my own leisure when time permits. Newsletters sent via email tend to pile up if I'm busy and then I just delete them.

  5. Thanks so much for your feedback everyone. I think you've just articulated what I was thinking. :-)

  6. I've been wondering about whether or not I should be doing a newsletter too. It seems a lot of bloggers do them & recommend doing them, but I never really understood the point. If you had something to say, wouldn't you just say it on your blog?! Besides, I find it hard enough to keep up with my blog -- I can't imagine adding another writing project to the mix. So I'm glad to see everyone's saying you shouldn't do one. I think that means I'm off the hook, too. :)

  7. I am both a reader and a writer, I am also very confused! Several blogs I enjoy are talking newsletter but I truly do not understand the difference between a blog and a newsletter?
I admit that I rather think of my blog as a magazine that just grows page by page as I feel like it, a newsletter could be rather demanding and I would be rather disappointed if you became sick of the whole thing!! Well those are my thoughts!!!!!

  8. I think you could pull off both. Add both new books you're interested in, book reviews, but also writing tidbits much like SubTerrain but on a much smaller scale and via e-mail of course.

I'd love to read your newsletter because I am both a writer and a reader! They go hand in hand.

  9. If it's something you want to do, do it! I'll read it. If you're already super-busy, don't give yourself the stress. Your blog is enough for me. And all your readers, I'd suspect.

  10. Hi Alison, I agree with all the other comments and you have probably already made your decision. If you really want to write a newsletter go for it but the thought of more work well...it is time you could spend in your garden, taking a bath, hanging out with your family. It is too easy for us to spend all our time in front of a screen. If you are going to do it perhaps monthly is the way to go rather than weekly.
