There's something about a windy day that puts your whole body on edge. Lips are dry. Skin is parched. Hair is tangled. And every nerve-ending is standing to attention, scratched and bleeding every time the air rolls over the flesh.
Is it any wonder that the wind brings out the crazy in all of us? Kids get high on the breeze, whipped into a frenzy by the constant movement. Adults are brought low by the same thing, longing for a moment's peace, every straw one step closer to the last one.
Even the Fibro is edgy tonight. The wires from the clothes line creak and bang against the house, like ghostly feet walking over the walls. The neighbours' trees rustle and whisper to each other, dropping leaves and tiny branches on our roof, like small, unwelcome gifts.
Mr3 is coughing. Coughing, coughing, coughing. Whimpering.
He wakes. He asks for a cuddle. I'm happy to oblige.
Everybody needs a safe harbour in the wind.
I'm high on more than the wind today, having been chosen as one of Kidspot's Top 50 Bloggers. The 'real' Allison is asking you to use my bright, shiny new button on the right-hand side of the page to vote for me. In other exciting news, I'm doing my first-ever guest post today - visit the lovely Lucy at Diminishing Lucy to see the Fibro on the move.

Hi Allison, I found you via Twitter tonight and so far, I'm really loving your blog, you're a beautiful writer.
ReplyDeleteJade
Congratulations! Not on the wind and coughing but on the top 50. Can we vote every day?
ReplyDeleteMore than any other weather pattern, I hate the wind. When it's windy it's like your clothesline is banging against my head over and over. I tend to stay indoors.
ReplyDeleteI've voted for you. I really hope you win. If the "Top Blogger" was awarded based on "Top Writer" you would win it for sure!!!!
For the record I hate windy days. More ruinous to my garden than heat, hail or rain! And of course I voted for you - your blog is a pleasure to read at all times.
ReplyDeleteAnd EATING! Eating is so hard on windy days; you always end up losing the top off your icecream, a mouth full of your own hair instead of salad, or actual sand in your sandwich. Humpf.
ReplyDeletep.s. congrats, and good luck for your Kidspot's Top 50 Bloggers nomination!
hi Alison
ReplyDeleteI think I've been here before but I found you again via top 50 blogger list , just checking out everyone.
It's been so windy at the farm (where we visit but contemplating moving here more permanently).
My kids turn into little monsters with the wind whipping them into a crazy frenzy (well more than normal).
They speak louder, repeat themselves incessantly "mum mum " and make more noise, run everywhere, leave doors open to bang and just make extra noise for the sake of it.
I do like the wind only for drying the washing.
I hope mr3 is feeling better soon !
What a truly lovely way to consider the role of a parent "...safe harbour in the wind." Congrats on the nomination.
ReplyDeleteYou lost me at "hair is tangled".
ReplyDeleteI've voted for a select few...and you're one of them! Congrats and good luck!
ReplyDeleteYep, more than happy to help send you to Dunk Island (I mean that in a good way!)
ReplyDeleteBig day at the Fibro!
ReplyDeleteyay! I voted at work and home! Is that cheating?
Commented on your post at Lucy's so going now :)
