February: Hair today, gone tomorrow

As far as months go, February is a bit of a bust as far as I'm concerned. It has none of the hope and optimism of September, none of the frenzy of December, none of the laidback appeal of January. It is a hot, sweaty, humid, frizzy chore of a month. A month of over-priced love statements, detoxing, back-to-schooling, dragging ourselves from holiday mode to oh-no-this-is-real-life mode. There is a good reason why magazines run all their money and careers stories in February - people's minds are on the nitty-gritty. And, frankly, it's not helping anyone's collective temperament.

Today was a classic February day. Steam rising from the ground, sun burning on my neck, moisture in the air turning into sweat on my arms, hair standing out in a Rhea Perlman-like halo (don't remember the barmaid from Cheers? look her up - she never met a hair straightener she liked). Yep, I'm channelling Sideshow Bob. Charming.

Over the past 25-odd Februaries, I have spent more money than I care to think about on de-frizzing hair products. Serums, mousses, oils, waxes, glosses - you name it, I've gone there in lightweight, heavyweight and superweight strengths. Guess what? None of them is a match for February. Not one.

The only thing that February has going for it is that it's short. Always look on the bright side, that's me.

  1. "frizzy chore of a month" = perfect description.

What you need is a Brazillian Blowout. And, no, they don't remove all your hair!! Give it a googling. It's really fab for defrizzing... even I am managing brilliantlyish this Feb. Love it. x

  2. I saw a post about this today. I don't think I can afford the time or the cost. Unfortunately.

  3. I'm the same- try every de-frizz product. At the moment I'm using a fudge shine oil and it's giving February a decent 'up yours'.

  4. February is just a bad hair month.

I'm feeling the urge to go shorter myself.

  6. Can you do the Kelsey Grammar voice too?

For me February is a cold, grey, month where the promise of Spring is just around the corner. To hear you say it's hot and humid and your hair is frizzing out sounds so weird to me. I was thinking that, if I lived somewhere where there was no climate as such, would our bodies/minds still go through the same cravings, the same cycles. February is a time for detoxing, for spring cleaning but if all the cues are gone, would we still do it? I suppose if we still had magazines telling us to we would. Am I profound or dumb?

  8. I hear you. I am still a Lucy Lank Locks (nothing frizzes mine much) but my wavy red headed Olivia tells me that her frizzy hair makes her feel like she has a space mans hat on. As a result of steamy weather.

    I get the gist...

  9. i totally agree, February is a little bit of 'the odd one out' in the year, even -drumroll, roses, confetti buy!more!flowers!- valentine's day doesn't change that.
I can't relate to the hair thing though.probably because I hardly have any.
(my hair is just bad at any time of the year and in any climate, so I keep it really short0

  10. The Brazilian treatment is helping me through a Queensland summer, Alison ... I was lucky to be offered the treatment and I always take my computer with me to the salon - I maximise all my time in the chair!

  11. Ah yes, I get the frizzies and the boof hair, I'd be quite satisfied with curls, just not these two! I use a hair straightener also and no matter how painstakingly straight I make it... humidity kills it every. time! SUCH a waste of effort.
March is a far more likeable month. Roll on March!
    Love this post :o)

  12. So funny reading how hot is it in February when I freezing my butt off here in London.

  13. I'm in the northern part of America where it's the driest, coldest time of the year. Hence, my hair is lifeless, static and stuck to me head like a helmet. I could do with some moisture...

Let's just both embrace or weather battered hair and say, right, February is a short month!

  14. Really like this post. February is all getting back to business. Where January is best intentions and loungy blue skies, February is neat and ordered: list making, labelling, and pencil sharpening. Thank goodness it's short.
And Autumn is just around the corner. Dust off your flannel PJs girls!

  15. As a fellow frizzy I hear you. I must look at this Brazilion thingy. At first I thought it meant "shave it all off" which wouldn't be a bad idea some days!

  16. Ugh, I so totally hear you. I just can't do a *thing* with mine right now.

  17. Thanks for the giggle! I totally hear you on the frizz front. I’ve tried everything too in my time, and yep, nothing works. And yep, I've never thought about it but there aren’t too many redeeming features about February. Sure is one hot, sweaty, humid, frizzy chore of a month.

  18. Jan and Feb are pretty terrible usually up here in Qld..I find the only thing to do is brush it back and tie it up..all day..every day..and night! It doesn't suit me short so up it goes.

  19. Even I am using the de-frizzing product this month. Never noticed the pattern before! I so want to see you right now so I can have a subtle giggle. Those little curls you have in the fringe region must be ringlets!

  20. Cool post - I love your hair.

I am a chemically straighened girl here - due to a woolly mammoth like situation on my head x

  21. Dammit - I clicked this link because it sounded like FINALLY somebody had found something that worked on Sideshow Bob hair.
Oh well.... at least I can sympathise.

  22. Rhea Pearlman halo! hilarious!

I too suffer from Frizzy February. today I left the house with anti-frizz serum, hair I washed three days ago AND hairspray, and still came home with a mop with a mind of its own...

  23. nothing too frizzy here, but a BAD case of the greasies. i HATE washing my hair all the time coz it goes fluffy, but they weighed down look ain't great either.

if only we could find a shop that had figured how to use "chic" and "sunhat" in the same sentence …

  24. No kidding, that SuBo defrizz thing is totally working for me, too. And cheap-chick that I am was totally happy that LivingSocial allowed me the pleasure for only $99!!

Otherwise, it's all about the snagless hairbands for me - if you can't fight it, pull it all back - is my motto!! ;)
