Mr7 is rather chuffed with himself today. His illustration for page seven of the Variety Children's story 'Hilda The Line Dancing Hen' was unleashed upon the world, and the notion that his work was now on public display made him stand a little taller. He asked me if he was famous now. Sort of, I replied. Well, as famous as someone named 'The Mysterious Mr7' gets. He insisted on that credit, by the way. He thinks it brings him closer to Sherlock Holmes.
It has to be said that getting the actual drawing done was not without its, er, drag-em-down-and-knock-em-out fighting moments. He was keen when I asked him, particularly when I told him it was for a charity that helped kids. But then the actual time came to draw, with me over one shoulder saying 'I really need this for tomorrow', and suddenly it wasn't so much fun anymore.
I was stressed, knowing that the Variety Children's Charity was relying on me and I was relying on him. Not an easy relationship dynamic. But he got there, in the end. As my Dad would say, 'Just like his mother'.
You can view the story, with illustration contributions from Edenland, Random Ramblings of a Stay at Home Mum, and My Pigeon Pair, among others, at the Variety Australia Facebook page. She's quite the girl, our Hilda.
Do your kids leave things to the last minute, or get in and do it straight away?

I have a feeling that M1 will be a leave it to the last minute kid. He's only 3 so I could be jumping the gun but so far he's looking at being a work under pressure type!

Another published talent in your household, love Posie
ReplyDeleteA proud mumma moment for sure. x
ReplyDeleteHow gorgeous!! I'd be very proud :-)
ReplyDeleteToo young to know yet but do you think this last-moment-genius stuff is genetic? If so the small boy has not a chance in hell of getting anything done ahead of schedule.
Judging by what goes on here I'd say it's a certainty that it's genetic...
ReplyDeleteMine definitely waits until the last minute! Much like me, but his work is generally top notch so I can't complain too much!
ReplyDeleteOh Al, I SO relate to this very thing - literally. I asked my stepdaughter to do it - four days later, worried emails from Variety, and a bit of a tiff with my hubby involving me saying "If she doesn't want to do it just tell meeeeeeeee" ... we had a picture. Thank GOD.
ReplyDeleteAm having a big time, over here. Currently hiding in my hotel room waiting for laxatives to kick in. SO glamorous.

We had the same dillema at the Pigeon Pair household. Master O needed some coaxing especially since he wanted to draw a transformer saving the hen.....
ReplyDelete"The Mysterious Mr 7" made my day. Love that he wanted a cool by-line.
ReplyDeleteWhen my 12 year old son was freaking out about having a project due, my very smart friend told me to tell him that "good doesn't equal easy". And then to say that I knew he could figure it out. And-- many tears (his) and gnashing of teeth (mine) later-- he finished the project and all was right with the world.
ReplyDeleteMr7 does have much to be proud. It might appear he inherited your creative gene.
ReplyDeleteWow congrats on this! It certainly was a lot of work eh? But isn't that how creative types are? ;)
ReplyDeleteMy 11yo son is king of the last-minute-people. By contrast, my 6yo daughter (who is one of those freakish kids that LOOOOOVES homework and any school-related activity) would start studying for the HSC if she could. I commented on another blog today that it's hard to believe that 2 kids from the same parents, growing up in the same house, with the same rule/routines etc, can be so spectacularly different. This is just another example.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on Mr 7's drawing. Clearly he got his creative gene from you!
The Leave it 'Til the Last Minute Syndrome, is sadly, something I have passed down to all three of my kids...well done fabulously famous The Mysterious Mr 7.
ReplyDeleteI had a real giggle over this post. How foolish I was to think that my priorities were on par with my guys when they were that age. Last minute kings they were then . As teenagers ...well most things didn't get done.
ReplyDeleteMy son gets his homework done pretty quickly. But when he asks for EXTRA WORK to bring home, he takes a long time to get into it and I have to nag and prod until he gets motivated. I've asked him not to bring home extra work when he doesn't have to. I think he learned his lesson with his recent Early Settlement work. His teacher gave him about 29 things to do which were all full on. I think she was teaching him another kind of lesson...
